Program Description

Event Details

The Japan Society of Greater Hartford will hold an onigiri cooking demonstration. Attendees will get to make and sample this simple yet delicious Japanese dish and have a chance to ask questions and get ideas for variations.

Onigiri (Rice balls) are an important part of Japanese home cooking. Emma Oshiro, the class instructor, has been making onigiri since she was 7 years old. Every time she visited her grandma’s house, they would make delicious rice balls wrapped with seaweed together, and eat them with pickled vegetables and miso soup. There are many varieties of onigiri today, filled with local ingredients, from sesame seeds to tuna.  You can even fill it with fried chicken! In this cooking class, you will get a chance to make a traditional onigiri, filled with ume-boshi (pickled plum), okaka (bonito-flakes), shake (salmon), and edamame, to name a few. Join this fun interactive class and find your favorite onigiri to share with your family & friends!

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Farmington Libraries.

Ages 16+. Registration Required. Masks Required.
