From the Farmington Room

So...what’s your story? Tell us at Maker Fair this year!

If you don’t already know, this year’s Maker Fair is happening on Sunday, March 22, from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM at the Farmington Library. It’s a day to play all over the library: things to do, things to make, things to learn. And this year, for the first time, the Farmington Room will be a part of it: we’ll be hosting a story-gathering and community archiving event during the fair.

All this winter, we’ll be preparing exhibits to help spark memories both inside and outside the room, plus writing and interview prompts for written and oral histories, and more exciting opportunities for Farmington/Unionville residents and workers (current and former) to deepen and expand on the already rich local history.

While the exhibits will focus on 1960 to about 2010, we encourage visitors to share any memories from any time. For a town with a population well under 30,000, it has been (and continues to be) home to a mighty slew of historical and cultural organizations, schools, religious communities, civic organizations, businesses, hangout spots, trails, community services, and more. Major roads and development projects have shaped the landscape of the town time and again. A variety of perspectives help us to understand a moment in time, and to discover what the community deems important and unique about itself.

Next month, I will share some of the most exciting developments in the library’s offerings on gathering and contributing your own memories and materials, which we’ll be doing demos for at the event. Stay safe and stay warm everyone!

As always come visit the Farmington Room on a Wednesday or Thursday from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM or make an appointment to come outside of those hours. I can be reached by email at jneely@farmingtonlibraries.org, or by phone at (860) 673-6791 ext. 5213.
