Join us online for the Farmington Libraries' 15th Annual Kristallnacht Lecture
Kristallnacht, also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass, was a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on November 9 - 10, 1938. German authorities looked on as SA paramilitary and civilians carried out these attacks and covered the streets with broken glass from the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues. This annual event at the Farmington Libraries commemorates the human spirit’s ability to overcome such persecution. For the safety of our presenter as well as of those in attendance, we will host this year's presentation online.
This year's speaker, Elizabeth Deutsch, was born in a small Hungarian village in 1927. Her childhood was a happy one, engaging a simple life with her family on a farm and caring for animals.
In 1944 Elizabeth was 15 years old when she was deported with her family to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Upon her arrival she was separated and put in a group with her sister, it was then, as she vividly remembers, that her fight for her survival would begin.
She endured starvation, abuse and sickness. She was then transported in a cattle car to three other concentration camps, Bergen Belsen, Bronsweig and Bandorf where she continued to witness the unimaginable.
Elizabeth and her sister were liberated in 1945, the remainder of her family perished in the holocaust. After the war she went to Sweden for five years, then came to the USA, and settled in Bridgeport Connecticut.
In 1954 she married her husband. She has two children and two granddaughters.
Elizabeth has been sharing her story for the past 40 years to area schools, Hebrew schools, colleges and churches. Although her story is one of unfathomable suffering, ultimately her survival and choice to tell her story are inspirational proof of the resilience of the human spirit.
